Thunder blossoms gorgeously above our heads,
Great, hollow, bell-like flowers,
Rumbling in the wind,
Stretching clappers to strike our ears…
Full-lipped flowers Bitten by the sun
Bleeding rain Dripping rain like golden honey–
And the sweet earth flying from the thunder.

– Jean Toomer (1922)

Several days of storms caused many schools in Perth and the South West to close last week including our sister schools at Yallingup and Denmark. The Parkerville region was affected by power shortages and so our school closed on Wednesday. Wednesday was a busy morning for all and after the first early morning call from Megan to say the school had no power, the phone calls began. Thank you to all the class carers and teachers who swung into action so quickly. With Kim and Paddy at the entrance of the school in the morning, only a few families who were not able to be contacted, were greeted to pass on the news. With phone lines down and mobiles unable to be charged by some parents, it was a great effort to find that we were able to contact so many people in such a short time.

I would like to thank Hayley who, during the morning, set about revising our phone tree to see if we could improve our procedure if needed again. Thank you to Paddy who visited the school in the afternoon to check power was on as indicated on the Western Power website around 2pm. Thank you also to our Bursar, Karen Adams who drove to the school at 6.30am the following morning to check the power was still on. What an amazing team effort!

Last week, the Board was pleased to announce the appointment of our new Education Administrator, Deb Williams. Deb’s experience in Steiner Education and her many other interests will be of great value to our school. Please read her letter to the community enclosed. Deb will begin working for the school in the third week of the holidays. This week, we will be holding Winter Festivals for the Early Childhood, 21st June 5pm and Primary Festival, Friday 22nd 5.45pm. Please note that, contrary to information sent home last week, the siblings of primary children are welcome to attend the Primary Festival. I look forward to seeing you then.

Warmest regards,
Vivienne Howson
Acting Education Administrator
